Big Apple Training About Dogs Common Dog Problems Big Apple Information

Both Randall and Jenny are graduates of the New York City ASPCA’s Dog Training Program. This twelve-week intensive course was designed to give new dog trainers a thorough education in modern dog training, covering everything from dog development to learning theory to proper equipment use to classroom management. It also provided the ASPCA, whose dogs primarily come through Humane Law Enforcement, with additional trainers. While half of our coursework was in class (instructed by Victoria Wells and Dr. Pamela Reid), the other half was conducted in the training room, working with shelter dogs on a variety of behavior issues, including basic manners, jumping, mouthing, leash pulling, resource guarding and dog-dog aggression. We also assisted in the training classes that were open to the general public, and thereby learned the best ways to teach owners how to work with their dogs.

Following their programs (Jenny graduated Fall 2004; Randall, Spring 2005), they both started amassing the 300 hours of training required to sit for the national Certified Pet Dog Trainer Exam (visit the CPDT Web site for more information on why you should choose a dog trainer who is a CPDT). Jenny sat for and passed the four-hour exam in March 2006; Randall will take it in November. In addition, both are members of the Association of Pet Dog Trainers (APDT).
